Their Mission
Achievekids teaches youth with complex emotional and developmental disabilities the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve greater independence. Expert staff supported by the community, provide programs for our students and families that are positive, individualized, and multi-disciplinary.
The Challenge
This educational facility accommodates special needs students, aged 2 to 22. It prepares students to lead the “normal” productive life that most people take for granted. Hallway traffic interfered with workspaces and created an unproductive working environment. State policy requires a private separate computer for confidential student data but, due to lack of privacy, the receptionist used a rear office that removed her from the front desk for half of her workday. Additionally, the lobby held an uninviting cold institutional feel that needed updating.
The Solution
Problems were addressed by providing a warmer, more efficient space. A workstation was created with a locking door to keep the confidential input station secure. Information can now be input with few interruptions without leaving the front desk unattended. Colors were selected carefully with consideration given to potential negative behavioral affects on students. The y were intended to stimulate the student’s imagination while encouraging them to reach the potential within themselves, the decorative multi-colored stars used in the design are symbolic of this potential. Framed student artwork displayed in the lobby instills a sense of importance and pride. Blending wall and ceiling colors gives the illusion of a new day dawning and the promise of hope and renewed opportunity. The lobby gives parents and visitors their first impression of the facility and imparts the feeling of a positive, safe, secure environment that encourages individuals to reach for the stars within.
